Roleplaying Rules

Whether you are completely new to roleplaying, or a veteran, all your questions about it can be answered here.

How to Roleplay

This site is an animal andromorphic pirate roleplay. What a mouthful, right? Broken down, what this means is that your characters are all animals that walk on two legs like humans. They can talk and sing and steer a boat just like a human could. And to add onto that, it's set in a pirate theme! Roleplaying is like writing a story cooperatively. You make some characters, your friends make others, and then they can talk to each other and go on adventures. The only limit is your imagination. How this works is that you'll make a thread or post in one of our many roleplaying regions. You can leave it open (all members can post) or closed (only certain members can post). You'll wait for someone to respond. Perhaps their character will walk up to yours and spill soup on their shirt! Or maybe their character is mean and wants to start a gun fight. The possibilities are endless. After they post, then it's your turn! And before you know it, you'll have an entire cooperative story written right here on your computer. Still confused? Come and check out our discord, and all of our members will be happy to help you explore TOTS!

Roleplaying Rules

1. You are only allowed five characters at a time
A new character can be made after your fifth character dies or goes missing, but five is the maximum capacity.

2. Missing characters cannot come back into roleplay
Some people like to give their character a "rode off into the sunset" ending instead of killing them. This is perfectly fine, however once this character does metaphorically ride off into whichever sunset they desire, they cannot come back.

3. Try to avoid paradoxing
Ooooo! Paradoxing, the big spooky word in the roleplaying world. A paradox is when a character has knowledge or experiences that they shouldn't. Like they've accidentally been teleported into the future. This can be avoided by communicating with fellow roleplayers, and planning out topics correctly.

4. Topics go by their own time, not real life's
Let's say you have a character in one topic (topic #1), and you make another topic (topic #2) with that character a week later. Your character let's say, gets a scar in topic #2. You go to post in topic #1 again, but your character does not have that scar. Why? Because topics keep the time of whenever they started. Your character is the same in topic #1 from beginning to end, no matter what happens in topic #2, because topic #2 is in the future.

5. Only control your own character
Roleplaying with others can be difficult, because oftentimes you want the characters of your friends to do and say different things than what they are doing. But just like real life, we can control only our own characters, and not those of others.

6. No OP characters
TOTS allows for a wide variety of customization as far as character creation goes, however we are all mortals, and it is not fair to other members if we make our characters overpowered. Your character must abide by the rules of roleplay, no matter how beefy they are.

7. No killing other people's characters without their permission
While you are free to roam in Tailia, killing other roleplayer's characters is a touchy matter. Only if they specifically ask you to are you then allowed to do so.

8. Give others a chance to post
If you are in a topic with more than two people, go with the posting order, and wait your turn. If you're person C, and person B hasn't posted yet, don't cut in front of them. It's ABC not ACB. Unless it's ACDC, which is a different matter entirely.

9. Your character must learn and explore the world, they don't automatically have endless knowledge
While you, the roleplayer may know things, your character does not. Only give them knowledge that is logical for them to have. Let's say they grew up in Wind Town, well then it would make sense for them to know every nook and cranny, but if they visit Raitoshi for the first time, they won't automatically know where the closest place to catch a drink is.

10. Your character must be 18 or older to have children
While this isn't how it works in real life, there aren't any andromorphic alligators walking around either. Keeping the birthing age at 18 ensures that no lines will be crossed when it comes to minors and illegal underage activity. It's fine for your 16 year old character to have a boyfriend, but keep the babies at that 18+ age.

11. All characters wishing to join a group or crew must ask the leader of that group first
This keeps members from hoping into groups without telling anyone, therefore causing paradoxes. This is explained in greater detail on the Group Request Form page.

Roleplaying Format

As this site is for all ages, there is no word count or post limit. You can do teeny posts, or you can do large posts! Whatever floats your pirate ship!

All roleplay on this site is in third-person.
Wrong: I surfaced above the water and gasped for air.
Right: Meno surfaced above the water and gasped for air.

All roleplay is in past-tense.
Wrong: Finn snarls and pulls out his gun.
Right: Finn snarled and pulled out his gun.

Please try and use good spelling and grammar in all roleplaying topics.
Wrong: Thank u sasha said and took the aple
Right: "Thank you!" Sasha said, and took the apple.
